About the museum
The museum was born after September 1973, when the mountaineers Sergio Collini and Giovanni Pellizzari found the remains of three soldiers of the Great War on the Lares glacier. As the glaciers retreated, more wartime finds kept emerging: the two began collecting material and testimonies, and the Municipality of Spiazzo made exhibition space available.
The collections are largely the result of donations from private individuals, associations and public bodies and include everyday objects of the soldiers, Austrian maps of the attack on the Corno di Cavento, photographs, sledges, letters and documents of combatants and veterans. The museum also keeps an archive of over 3,000 original photographs. Among the most interesting pieces are the diary of the Austro-Hungarian lieutenant Felix Hecht, a Minucciani mortar, a field forge and a geodetic compass used for the mine gallery of Col di Lana. Wooden crosses carved by Russian prisoners of war are also on display.
The story concerns the Carè Alto area, an important logistics base with five cableways and a power station, and the Italian advance on the Crozzon di Lares in 1916 and on the Corno di Cavento in 1917. Some display cases also recall the Second World War, with the remains of an aircraft that came down in the Val San Valentino. The ground floor was set up with the support of the Autonomous Province of Trento and the historical committee of the SAT; the first floor was added in 2021.
