About the museum
The Centro ambientale archeologico is housed in a former military complex built by the Austrians in the early 19th century, when Legnago was an important fortress and one of the four strongholds of the Quadrilatero, together with Verona, Peschiera and Mantua. The building was first a cavalry barracks and was later converted into a military hospital, nicknamed “alla prova” (“at the test”) because the earth embankment on its roof had to withstand explosions.
After the annexation of Veneto to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866 it passed to the Municipality of Legnago. In the 1930s it housed a lapidary collection and the first town exhibition of prehistoric finds from the Valli Grandi Veronesi. After restoration work in 1997–1999 it became the Museo civico di Legnago in 2001.
With almost 1,200 square metres, most of them exhibition space, it is the reference archaeological museum for the Veronese plain. The route, spread over four rooms, follows the Neolithic, the Copper and Bronze Ages with pile dwellings and terramare settlements, the Iron Age of the ancient Veneti, and the Etruscan and Celtic presence. There is also a conference room and an educational programme for schools.
