About the museum
The museum is housed in the Castel San Zeno, the oldest part of Montagnana's medieval fortifications, restored in 1996. It is named after Antonio Giacomelli, honorary inspector of the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) who worked to create it, and it belongs to the national association of small museums (Associazione Nazionale Piccoli Musei).
The archaeological section displays finds from the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, material from an Iron Age settlement at Borgo San Zeno, and Roman funerary monuments, including the stele of the gens Vassidia. The medieval and early modern section includes two 14th-century frescoes, a painting attributed to Alessandro Varotari, known as the Padovanino, a parchment map by Luca Zappati (1566–1575) and a collection of local ceramics. One room is dedicated to the tenors Giovanni Martinelli and Aureliano Pertile from Montagnana, with costumes, documents and photographs.
