About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Accordi-Fioroni, built at the end of the 19th century on the site of the Quadrilatero fortress, which was demolished after the 1882 breach of the Adige river. The palazzo was built for the Accordi family and passed to the Fioroni family following a marriage celebrated in 1904.
In 1939 the Fioroni family definitively acquired the building with the intention of making it the centre of a museum to be donated to the city. Maria Fioroni gathered over time relics of the Risorgimento, objects from the Italian colonies and other collections. The project was interrupted by the war: in 1944 an air raid destroyed much of the palazzo, after the most valuable material had been moved to safety elsewhere.
Between 1946 and 1947 the building was rebuilt on its original foundations, with the ground-floor rooms enlarged to house the city museum. Today the Fondazione Fioroni runs the house museum, the public library and other cultural activities.
The reconstructed rooms keep their historic arrangement, with period furniture, carpets and chandeliers framing the objects on display. The Risorgimento rooms tell the story of Italian unification, from the Napoleonic campaigns and the Carbonari and Mazzinian uprisings to the wars of independence and Garibaldi.
