About the museum
The archaeological documentation centre was founded in 2009 with the donation by Antonio Marseglia, who entrusted over 300 archaeological finds to the community; in 2011 documents on the Messapian site of Muro Tenente were added. It belongs to the museum hub of Latiano and is housed in the Imperiali castle, in Piazza Umberto I.
The Marseglia collection is varied and covers a very wide span of time, from prehistory to the Hellenistic age, and from the late Roman period to the Middle Ages. A group of about 60 pieces includes Neolithic vessels and fragments with geometric decoration, stone, flint and obsidian tools, and perforated shells. A second group of about 100 objects of use and craftsmanship includes vessels, fibulae, armlets, rings, keys and locks, and reliquaries.
The collection is completed by twenty didactic reconstructions of prehistoric weapons and tools. The centre is linked to the Muro Tenente archaeological park, a Messapian site of about 30 hectares that lies partly in the territory of Latiano and partly in that of Mesagne.
