About the museum
The museum was founded in 1973 in Taranto by the naturalist and marine biology lecturer Pietro Parenzan, and for some twenty years it was housed in a wooden building in the Villa del Peripato. In 1993 Michele Camassa and Paola Di Turo moved the collection to Latiano, in the province of Brindisi. Today it is run by the volunteers of the association I.S.Bio.S.
The collection comprises thousands of biological, geological, anthropological and palaeontological finds, arranged in four sections: subterranean biology, geology, general palaeontology and human palaeontology. Sections on underground architecture and on subterranean resources are being prepared.
