About the museum
The museum opened in 1974 on the initiative of the Pro Loco di Latiano, thanks to numerous objects donated by citizens and linked to the recent past of the community. Since 1991 the collection has belonged to the municipality, while the Pro Loco continues to look after visits and activities.
The museum is housed in the former Dominican convent, a 16th-century building that now also houses other museums of the city’s museum complex, such as the Museo del Sottosuolo and the Museo della Storia della Farmacia. The museum belongs to the ethno-anthropological collections, which preserve both everyday objects and testimonies of intangible heritage such as festivals, rites and songs.
The route includes domestic, craft and agricultural rooms reconstructed with original pieces, for a total of over 3,500 objects of rural life. A special section is devoted to textiles and clothing, with more than 600 pieces; other sections cover wine and ceramics. The Archivio della Memoria (archive of memory) holds thousands of documents, including photographs and recordings of intangible heritage. All captions are in Italian and in the Latiano dialect.
