About the museum
The Pinacoteca comunale di Latiano has been housed since 2004 in Palazzo Imperiali, which faces Piazza Umberto I, the town's main square. The building, perhaps of 13th-century origin, was remodelled several times, and its present appearance dates from 1714, as the inscriptions on the façade show.
The last member of the Imperiali family of Francavilla, the marquis Guglielmo Imperiali, handed the palace over to the municipality in 1909. Over time the building has housed the municipal library, the picture gallery and a centre for archaeological documentation. Next to the palace is the chapel, now the church of the Immacolata, designed by Mauro Manieri.
The collection includes the Quadreria Imperiali, a group of large 18th-century Neapolitan canvases, and works by young contemporary artists from the Salento.
