About the museum
The Museo archeologico di Portus Scabris, also known as MAPS, opened in 2009 to present the results of the underwater excavations carried out between 2000 and 2001 in the Portiglioni bay, before the construction of the marina. The investigations identified the remains of an ancient trading port in the Gulf of Follonica, identified with Portus Scabris.
The museum is housed in a hydraulic station of 1905, the casello overlooking the Padule di Scarlino, a wetland protected by the Ramsar Convention. The exhibition occupies six rooms on two floors, five exhibition halls and a video room, while the ticket office and bookshop are in the premises opposite, where the visit begins.
The exhibition shows materials recovered from the seabed: amphorae and pottery thrown into the sea, objects that fell during the loading and unloading of ships, and remains of wrecks. They document intense trade already from the 3rd century BC. The route also explains the tools and techniques of underwater archaeology.
