About the museum
The museum tells the story of the relationship between the lakeside communities and Lake Trasimeno, which formed around one million seven hundred thousand years ago following tectonic movements. Two moments marked the history of the lake: the spread of Christianity, which with Lent increased the demand for fish and led to the evolution of fishing techniques, and the construction in the 15th century of an artificial outlet channel (emissario) commissioned by Braccio da Montone, which reduced flooding. A second outlet was built in the 20th century.
The route is divided into four large rooms devoted to the times of the day (dawn, midday, afternoon and evening) and illustrates fishing techniques from prehistory to the present day. The materials on display include clay net weights from the Bronze Age and the Etruscan-Roman period, prehistoric stone bait, fishing tools and watercolours by Elio Pasquali.
Completing the visit are a boat-shaped multimedia room, seating about 40, used for educational activities, video conferences and events, and two large aquariums showing the current fish fauna of the lake.
