About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the civilisation of the olive tree and of DOP extra virgin olive oil, the emblematic product of Trevi. It was created by the municipality of Trevi with support from the Umbria Region and the European Community in the former convent of San Francesco, a 13th-century building remodelled in the 19th century by Giuseppe Valadier, and is part of the San Francesco museum complex.
The route is divided into four sections (Botany; Getting to Know Oil and the Olive Tree; The Olive Tree as a Symbol of Peace; History of the Olive Tree), with finds, models, animations, films and multimedia content. One section illustrates the “microcosm of oil”, that is, the cultivation of olive trees and the production of oil in the area and their role in shaping the landscape. Another tells the millennia-old history of the olive tree in the Mediterranean and includes a collection of oil lamps and unguent jars from the Near East and Europe, as well as archaeological finds from Cyprus dating to around 2000 BC.
The visit comes with an audio guide and begins with the account of a local grower, who explains the growing cycle, the production and storage of oil, together with local techniques, dialect expressions, rituals and beliefs.
