About the museum

The Centro studi David Lazzaretti was established by the Municipality of Arcidosso in 1981, following initiatives in 1978 for the centenary of the death of Davide Lazzaretti (1834-1878), the “prophet of Monte Amiata”. The centre documents and disseminates the history of the 19th-century religious movement he founded, read as a utopian episode in the history of Monte Amiata and of the popular classes after Italian unification. The library, archive and photo collection can be consulted at Arcidosso’s municipal library.

The exhibition section was originally in the town hall and was moved in 2008 to the Aldobrandesca fortress, in Piazza del Castello, where it was opened on 18 August 2008. It occupies three rooms on the second floor and hosts the exhibition “David Lazzaretti il Messia dell’Amiata. Cimeli e documenti”, produced together with the Museo nazionale delle arti e tradizioni popolari in Rome.

In the first room are panels on Lazzaretti’s biography, tunics and banners, a wooden sculpture and the hierarchy of the Giurisdavidic community. The second room illustrates his preaching, the three institutions he founded and the history of the sacred buildings of Monte Labbro, with a small video room. The third room is devoted to the trials, the journey to France, the procession of 18 August 1878 and the Siena trial of 1879, with display cases of memorabilia and manuscripts.
