About the museum
The art collection of Castel del Piano is on the first floor of Palazzo Nerucci, an elegant 16th-century building in the historic centre, on the village’s main square. The display was set up in 2005 and opened in 2006.
The original core came from nine works donated in 1883 by the Vegni family to the hospital of Castel del Piano: landscapes and views in the 19th-century taste, an 18th-century silk embroidery with a portrait of Cosimo III de’ Medici, and a pastel self-portrait by Rosalba Carriera. Over time the holdings were enriched by further donations from local families, including paintings, drawings, sculptures and archaeological finds.
The route includes the Salone dei Notabili (Hall of Notables), decorated with portraits of local personalities, and the rooms of the Pinacoteca Edo Cei, devoted to the early works (1952–1978) of the painter associated with Castel del Piano, with paintings, caricatures and posters, alongside the sculptures of Piero Bonacina. In the west wing is the Antiquarium, with about 120 Etruscan finds from the area, mostly dating between the 3rd and 1st century BC.
The palazzo also houses the municipal library and the historic archive. The collections are promoted within the Sistema Museale Amiata and the museum networks of Maremma.
