About the museum
The visitor centre of the wildlife park and nature reserves of Monte Amiata is located in the historic centre of Arcidosso, near the Aldobrandesque fortress. It opened in 2003, mainly with funds from the Leader II programme of the Comunità montana Amiata grossetano and with contributions from the Province of Grosseto. Since 2005 it has been part of the Sistema museale Amiata grossetano and of the Musei di Maremma network.
It serves as an educational point of reference for the wildlife park and the natural reserves of the area, in particular the Monte Labbro reserve. It is housed in a 19th-century palazzo, possibly of 18th-century origin, which once hosted a nursery school.
The exhibition occupies five rooms with maps, dioramas and graphic panels. After an introductory area with films, the route presents the minerals and hydrogeology of Monte Amiata, the vegetation of the Monte Labbro reserve, fungi and beech woods, and a freshwater ecosystem reconstructed on the model of a real stream in the park. The archive and photo library are kept at the Arcidosso municipal library. The centre is open by reservation only.
