About the museum
The museum, opened in 2011, is housed in the 17th-century Palazzo Toffoli in Montereale Valcellina and holds material from excavations carried out during the last twenty years of the 20th century by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Friuli Venezia Giulia. Research has shown that the area was inhabited almost without interruption from the Late Bronze Age (14th century BC) to the present day.
The most significant period is the settlement of the 5th century BC, with the so-called Casa dei dolii, whose large terracotta containers help reconstruct everyday life, in a period of prosperity linked to its position on the foothill road and to Etruscan influences from the Po plain. The displays also include swords and weapons offered to the waters of the Cellina gravel bed, probable votive offerings, large decorated vessels, traces of dwellings and craft activities, metal jewellery, and grave goods from Lombard-period tombs with bone combs and small knives.
The educational activities and opening arrangements are run by Eupolis Studio Associato, which offers guided tours, assisted routes and workshops for schools, children and adults.
