About the museum

The church of Nostra Signora de sos Regnos Altos stands on the parade ground of the Serravalle castle, also called the Malaspina castle, on the hill overlooking Bosa. Romanesque in origin, it probably served as the palatine chapel of the fortress; the date of foundation is undocumented and hypotheses range between the 12th and 14th centuries. Its present name was given to it at the end of the 19th century, when it was lengthened towards the east with the demolition of the original apse.

The consolidation works of 1972–73 brought to light, beneath the plaster, a cycle of 14th-century frescoes covering all the walls of the ancient nave, a unique work in Sardinia. The frescoes, dated on stylistic grounds to the period when the castle belonged to the Giudicato of Arborea, show the Last Supper, the Adoration of the Magi, the Doctors of the Church, a procession of saintly women and men, Saint Christopher and, on the north wall, scenes linked to Franciscan spirituality.

The most famous piece is the “Encounter of the Three Living and the Three Dead”, a meditation on the vanity of earthly goods, alongside the weighing of souls. The chapel is visited with the guides of the cooperative L’Antico Tesoro, which manages its opening.
