About the museum

The museum occupies one of the best-preserved buildings of the old tanneries of Bosa, dating from around 1700, in the Sas Conzas district on the left bank of the River Temo. The tradition of leather tanning in Bosa is traced back to Roman times and was rediscovered in the seventeenth century. The activity reached its peak from the second half of the nineteenth century to the first half of the twentieth, when up to thirty factories were in operation.

In the second half of the twentieth century the sector declined, partly because of hygiene problems and the smells of production, which were hardly compatible with growing tourism. Many buildings were later converted into shops and homes. The tanneries, two storeys high and built of red trachyte, are regarded as a symbol of Sardinian proto-industrial archaeology.

The visit route explains the stages of tanning. On the ground floor are the well, the press and the soaking vats; on the middle level the stages of tanning, dyeing and washing; on the upper floors the finishing, with the production of soles and cowhide leather. A glass walkway allows visitors to look down at the original vats. The museum has an educational classroom and offers guided tours.
