About the museum
The cathedral of San Pietro, called extra muros because it stands outside the medieval borough, lies not far from the left bank of the River Temo, in a valley inhabited without interruption from prehistory until the end of the 16th century, when the Sa Costa district on the Serravalle hill was completed and the older Bosa was abandoned. Archaeological excavations have identified Roman-period materials and a walled cemetery on the north flank.
The inscribed stones set into the outside wall and kept inside recall that the bishop Costantino de Castra was its builder towards the middle of the 11th century, but examination of the masonry indicates an earlier structure. The apse block, damaged by river floods, was carefully rebuilt in the mid-20th century, restoring the building’s medieval appearance.
The church today has a Romanesque-Gothic appearance and three naves on square pillars; part of the ancient liturgical furnishing is preserved in the local curia. The tripartite façade, with three wide ogival arches and interlaced small arches, reveals the work of Cistercian craftsmen; above the portal stands a tall recycled lintel with the figures of Saints Paul and Peter, Costantino and the Madonna and Child. The church is no longer a cathedral, a title that passed to a building at the foot of the hill; visits are managed by the cooperative L’Antico Tesoro.
