About the museum
The Museo di Santa Croce is housed in the 14th-century church of Santa Croce, within the complex of the former convent of San Francesco in Umbertide. The heart of the museum is the “Deposition of the Cross” by Luca Signorelli, commissioned at the beginning of 1516 by the Confraternity of Santa Croce and completed in July of the same year: the altarpiece still stands in the place for which it was painted, on the high altar, together with the canvases of the side altars. The predella depicts scenes of the finding of the True Cross.
After seismic improvement works financed with PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) funds and the restoration of the bell tower, damaged by the 2023 earthquake, the museum reopened in September 2026 with a new display, managed by Genesi Srl, Società Benefit.
The route is chronological: it begins with archaeological finds from the area, mainly Etruscan, including those linked to Monte Acuto; it continues with works from the town’s churches and the history of its confraternities up to the Renaissance and the Deposition, and reaches the 20th century with ceramics from the Rometti manufactory, historic and contemporary, moved to the museum shortly before the manufactory’s centenary in 2027.
