About the museum
The San Francesco museum complex of Montone is housed in the Gothic church and in the former Franciscan convent, built in the 13th and 14th centuries on the houses of the Olivi and Fortebracci families. About a century later the Fortebracci took control of the church and decorated it: between 1422 and 1424 Braccio Fortebracci commissioned Antonio Alberti da Ferrara to paint the frescoes of the apse, and artists such as Luca Signorelli and Benedetto Bonfigli also worked there.
In the 16th century a wing of the convent was added. After the suppression of the religious orders in 1860, the works from the churches of Montone became municipal property, and after restoration the complex was opened to the public as a museum in 1995.
In the rooms of the convent are displayed paintings, sculptures and furnishings, among them a wooden group of the Deposition from the 13th century, the banner of the Madonna della Misericordia by Bartolomeo Caporali (1482), the Annunciation by Papacello and Vittore Cirelli (1532) and a collection of textiles from the 15th to the 19th century. On the ground floor, MuMO offers a multimedia route dedicated to Braccio Fortebracci, while an archaeological section presents finds from a Roman villa of the 2nd century AD near Santa Maria di Sette.
