About the museum
The museum grew out of the work of the Gruppo Archeologico di Mergozzo, founded after a small exhibition set up in the summer of 1969. The group collected finds from private owners and from excavations carried out in Mergozzo and elsewhere, storing them in the old Casa del Predicatore.
From 2003 the collection moved to its present home, which opened in September 2004 and was enriched in 2018 with new finds and multisensory and multimedia stations. The building is the 18th-century Palazzo Tamini, the family home of the doctor and benefactor Luigi Tamini, who donated it to the Comune in 1874 so that it could house the primary school and a technical drawing school. After various uses, including housing and a post office, it has been restored since 2002.
The route runs over several floors with the finds in chronological order, from the Neolithic and the Copper and Bronze Ages (with the Baceno combat axe and the Arbola bronze dagger) to the Iron Age, the Roman period in Mergozzo with the Praviaccio and Cappella necropolises, and finally the late antique and early medieval tombs. Bilingual panels, multimedia and touch stations and educational inserts for children accompany the visit.
