About the museum
The Parish Museum of Ornavasso houses works of art that were once kept in the village churches and chapels and were moved here for safety reasons. Among the oldest pieces is the 14th-century wooden statue of Saint Anthony Abbot, from the alpine chapel of Casalecchio, which according to tradition is linked to the first Walser settlement of Ornavasso.
The collection includes a 15th-century Madonna of the Rosary, a 16th-century statue of Saint Martha and four 17th-century reliquaries attributed to the sculptor Giulio Gualio of Antronapiana. Of particular note are the Lamentation over the Dead Christ of 1612, made up of eight statues in painted and gilded poplar wood, and the first Baroque wooden altar, dating from the late 17th century, from the Sanctuary of La Guardia. Also displayed are a 17th-century Last Supper by an unknown author, formerly in the crypt of Saint Martha, and five large canvases with Saint Peter and the four Evangelists from the Sanctuary of La Guardia.
The museum also includes a historic library, with works from the 16th to the 19th century, mainly on theology, which belonged to Don Giovanni Battista Cracchi, parish priest from 1849 to 1903, and a historic parish archive with documents for local history, including a printed copy of the Statutes of 1575.
