About the museum

The archaeological section of the Museo del Paesaggio is housed in the Palazzo Comunale of Ornavasso. The collection has been internationally known since the late 19th century: in 1890, during railway construction work, two necropolises were discovered by chance, those of San Bernardo and In Persona. The recovery was carried out by Enrico Bianchetti between 1890 and 1893.

The main core comprises over 1,500 grave goods from a Lepontic community, which document the gradual Celtic influence and subsequent Romanisation: bronze and ceramic vessels, tools, coins, weapons, jewellery and clay balsamaria (perfume flasks).

To these are added a group of Magna Graecia materials (8th–4th centuries BC) linked to a Daunian necropolis at Ascoli Satriano, and a deposit from the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) in Intra, with finds from the Roman period and ceramics from central Italy. An audio guide activated by QR code lets the ancient owners of the objects tell the story of the display cases; it can also be consulted online.
