About the museum

The Ecomuseo del Granito di Montorfano tells the story of quarrying and of the traditions linked to stone in the area of Mergozzo and its surroundings. It includes the quarry areas of the pink marble of Candoglia, the white granite of Montorfano, the green granite of Mergozzo and the pink granite of Baveno, igneous rocks of the Permian period, about 275–283 million years old. The area is part of the UNESCO Sesia Val Grande Geopark.

The ecomuseum was recognised by the Piedmont Region in 2007. Since January 2017 an agreement has linked the Comuni of Mergozzo and Baveno (with the GranUM museum) and the Gruppo Archeologico di Mergozzo, to present together the millennia-long history of quarrying in the area.

The seat is the Antica Latteria. Visitors can follow several routes: on the Montorfano, to San Giovanni in Montorfano with its Romanesque church, in the village, at Candoglia, to the Ca’ d’la Norma and the hamlets, as well as itineraries on the use of granite in Italy and three Romanesque routes. Two museums complete the offer: the MuMe, Museo Archeologico di Mergozzo, devoted to the history and archaeological sites of the locality, and the MuMaG, Museo del Marmo e del Granito (opened in 2023), open only on special occasions or on request.
