About the museum
The museum opened in 1988, on the occasion of the five-hundredth anniversary of the construction of the Tempio civico della Beata Vergine Incoronata, a Renaissance masterpiece of Lodi. It occupies three underground rooms of different sizes, located where houses of the old Lomellini district (contrada) stood in the 15th century, demolished to make room for the temple.
Some traces of the rooms' original function remain, such as a well that still works and the chutes used for unloading firewood.
The collection holds altar furnishings and objects for liturgical celebrations: reliquaries, monstrances, candelabra, censers, chalices, vestments and two illuminated codices. Among the most remarkable pieces are a precious late 16th-century pax (liturgical peace board) by Milanese enamellers, a 16th-century cross, chalices and censers of the 17th and 18th centuries, and a 19th-century monstrance by Luigi Caber.
