About the museum
The Collection of Domestic Animal Anatomy of the University of Bologna was founded in 1882, when Professor Clemente Papi took over the direction of the anatomical cabinet. Initially it numbered about a hundred preparations, rising to 650 in 1885 and to around 2,000 in 1922. Its purpose was to gather material useful for the study of practical anatomy.
The collection consists mainly of “dry” preparations and, to a lesser extent, plaster and papier-mâché models. Notable are numerous myological preparations and 80 natural and artificial skeletons of birds and mammals, including horse skeletons showing different phases of the gait.
There are also preparations of the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, urogenital and nervous systems of various domestic mammals, with a rich series of brains and of spinal cord preparations made using the Giacomini method. The collection is completed by some preparations of wild animals, such as the skeletons of a lioness and of monkeys, and the digestive system and heart of an elephant. It is part of the Sistema Museale di Ateneo (university museum system) of the University of Bologna.
