About the museum
The collection is part of the Sistema Museale di Ateneo of the University of Bologna. Its original nucleus was assembled in 1863 by Giovanni Battista Ercolani, who gathered 1,704 specimens of veterinary pathological anatomy and teratology from the Laboratorio di Anatomia comparata founded by Azzoguidi. The holdings have continued to grow since then.
The material includes dry preparations, pieces preserved in alcohol, teratological skeletons, coloured drawings and plaster and wax models. The coloured plastics are described as unique of their kind. The site is in Ozzano dell’Emilia, in the veterinary complex of the University, at via Tolara di Sopra.
The collection can be visited free of charge by appointment. Guided and educational tours are available on request, and the museum also offers the route “Animali fantastici e mostruosi” (fantastic and monstrous animals).
