About the museum
The Scoppieto archaeological area lies on a plateau above the Tiber valley, in the territory of Baschi, in an area rich in clay, water and firewood. It marks the start of a nature and archaeology trail of the Parco fluviale del Tevere. Excavations carried out by the University of Perugia since 1995 have revealed an earlier sanctuary, over which a pottery workshop was built at the end of the 1st century BC.
The workshop remained active for about a century and produced fine tableware, so-called terra sigillata, named after the stamp used to impress its decorative motifs, as well as lamps and bricks. Across the roughly 2,000 m² excavated, the potters' workstations can be identified, each with its hole for the potter's wheel, its clay basin and its brazier, along with areas for refining clay and for firing. The potters signed their products, which has made it possible to trace their distribution: the Tiber offered cheap transport to Rome and the Mediterranean. After the workshop ceased operation, the area was used for housing until the 4th century AD.
Finds from the excavation are displayed in the Antiquarium comunale, in the municipal palace of Baschi.
