About the museum
The complex lies in the heart of the old ghetto of Casale Monferrato, where Jews settled at the end of the 16th century and were forced to live from 1724 on the order of Victor Amadeus II. The building occupies one entire side of Vicolo Salomone Olper. Until 1848 synagogues could not have a recognisable façade or direct access from the street, so the entrance has always been from the inner courtyard.
The synagogue was inaugurated in 1595 and was enlarged and restored several times; today it presents the Piedmontese Baroque-Rococo splendour of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Museum of Jewish Art and History, known as the Museo degli Argenti, designed by the architect Giulio Bourbon as part of the project to reopen the complex in 1969, holds one of the most important collections of Jewish art and historical objects in Europe, with ritual silverware and embroidered textiles.
The Museo dei Lumi, created from the 2000s in the premises of the former matzah bakery, houses more than 250 artist-made chanukkiot. The route also includes the entrance hall with the Shoah Memorial by Antonio Recalcati, the courtyard with contemporary works of art and the historical archive of the Community.
