About the museum
The Museo del Tesoro del Duomo, known as “Sacrestia aperta” (open sacristy), is one of the satellite sites of the museum system of the diocese of Casale, whose central base is the Museo diocesano. It is located in the service rooms of the cathedral of Sant’Evasio, which are still used in a dual way today. Created in several phases, it has been open since November 2003 with the inauguration of the Deambulatorio (ambulatory). Opening is ensured by the volunteers of the Associazione Antipodes ODV, who welcome and accompany visitors.
The route begins in the Deambulatorio, where the 19th-century restoration placed sculptures from the 12th to the 16th centuries and parts of the mosaic floor of the old Romanesque cathedral (12th century). It continues to the Corridoio dei Vescovi (Bishops’ Corridor) with silverware and goldsmiths’ work, then to the Sacrestia (sacristy) with wooden furnishings, paintings, statues and bas-reliefs from the 16th-century altar of Sant’Evasio, and the Cross of Theodore Palaeologus, donated to the cathedral in 1466. The bell tower displays church furnishings, goldsmiths’ work and textiles, while the Cappella di Sant’Evasio, designed by Alfieri, holds the saint’s urn. Since September 2021 the route has included the Sala capitolare (chapter house), built from 1785 and decorated with neoclassical stuccoes by Giovanni Battista Bernero. The “Percorso archeologico dei sottotetti” (attic archaeological route) allows visitors to walk on a walkway above the vaults and observe the medieval structures of the apse and the naves.
