About the museum
The conserva, also called ghiacciaia (ice house) and described as the “mother of the fridge”, is a semi-underground room with a vaulted ceiling and a circular opening at the centre, through which snow and ice were stored in winter to keep perishable food cold.
The Conserva di Calderino served the hamlet of houses known as the Maremmana, the old centre of the village. When the changes of modern times caused it to fall into oblivion, it continued to exist as a service room for the Sassi butcher’s shop and the Pedretti grocery shop.
Today it has retained its architectural features almost intact and is the seat of the association La Conserva Circolo ARCI, which manages its opening to the public.
