About the museum
In the village of Albard, a hamlet of Bard, the chestnut was once the staple food of the peasant diet. To illustrate its processing, a grehe, the typical small two-storey rural building used to dry the fruit, has been re-displayed in the heart of a chestnut grove.
Built against the rock beside other similar buildings in an area once used for storage, the grehe shows the original tools with the help of information panels: the hammer for opening the burrs, the pincers for extracting the chestnuts and the coarse hemp sacks that were beaten on a block to remove the skins, which were then separated by shaking the produce in a winnowing fan, called “lo van” in dialect.
