About the museum
The reserve museum was set up in an old building in the hamlet of Grancia, in Morino, and opened in March 2000. It is called “Ecomuseo della Riserva” because it is the first piece of the planned ecomuseum network to be completed. It brings together a local museum on natural and historical-anthropological aspects, the nature reserve’s visitor centre, and an educational laboratory aimed mainly at young people.
The route, which starts at the lowest level where the entrance is, presents the reserve’s environments as the seasons change, from the old village of Morino to the beech woods, from the cliffs over which the waterfall falls to the peaks. The ground-floor room focuses on emotion and discovery through the senses; the rooms upstairs read the territory through three landscape areas, describe human intervention from Roman settlements to medieval incastellamento (the building of fortified villages) and the 1915 earthquake, and present the seasons of the beech forest and the landscape of the cliffs, with the rare carnivorous plant Pinguicola. A recap game concludes the visit.
The visitor centre also includes a tourist information point open all year, a media library for children and young people, a projection room, educational workshops and a teaching garden with medicinal plants.
