About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the ancient town of Antinum, a centre of the Marsi that later became a Roman municipium, and it bears the names of Domenico and Francesco Ferrante, among the first scholars and custodians of local finds. Conceived in 1995 and established by regional law in 1998, it was inaugurated on 11 April 2015 in the premises of the former church of Santa Maria, on a buttress overlooking the Roveto valley.
The deconsecrated building was restored and adapted between 2004 and 2011 with contributions from the Region of Abruzzo, the Archaeological Heritage Authority (Soprintendenza), the municipality and local associations.
The rooms present materials dating from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD: terracotta votive offerings, grave goods from the craft area of Capistrello, a bronze statuette of Diana from Corcumello, coins and vessels from the sites of Terravecchia and Porta Campanile, late Republican tableware and inscriptions on funerary cippi of the imperial period. A reproduction of the Bronze of Antino, a plaque in the Marsian language held in the Louvre, is also on show. The venue also hosts talks and exhibitions, often devoted to the Scandinavian painters of Kristian Zahrtmann's circle.
