About the museum
The museum was set up by the Pro Loco together with the municipal administration and opened on 14 August 2014. It is housed in some rooms of Balsorano railway station, in Via della Stazione, and is also known as the museum of transhumance and of the spontaneous art of the Marsicani (people of the Marsica).
The collection presents tools and implements used by the shepherds of the Valle Roveto during the time of subsistence farming. Most of the objects come from Balsorano Vecchio and date from before the 1915 Marsica earthquake; they document the harvesting of grapes and olives, shearing, animal husbandry, milking and the production of dairy products and cheese.
Some paintings depict local shepherds and the transhumance routes towards the Pescasseroli–Candela drove road (tratturo) or towards southern Lazio. Two other rooms in the station house a numismatic section and one devoted to trains and railways.
