About the museum
The Ecomuseo Terra del Castelmagno was established in 2007 by the cultural association La Cevitou together with the Region of Piedmont, with the aim of recovering ancient paths, abandoned places and traditional activities of the Valle Grana in the Cuneo area. The territory, of Occitan culture, revolves around the Castelmagno cheese, produced and matured only in the municipalities of Monterosso Grana, Pradleves and Castelmagno, but it also includes architecture, woodworking, the quarrying of slate, mills, forges, small hydroelectric plants and migrations.
The Museo Terra del Castelmagno, in the hamlet of San Pietro, interprets the heritage of the local community with installations, immersive technologies and panels: the display recreates an old house with a stove and a laid table, and addresses themes such as festivity, work, emigration and ritual and healing systems, up to the production cycle of Castelmagno. In-depth exhibitions are curated by the Centro di ricerca e studi della Valle Grana.
The ecomuseum also includes other sites and routes: the “Paese senza tempo” in San Pietro, populated by figures of iron and hay (the “babaciu”), the water-powered machines, the reconstruction of the Narbona hamlet at Campomolino, a library specialising in mountain subjects and educational activities at the cheese dairy in Pradleves.
