About the museum
The ethnographic museum is part of the Coumboscuro Centre Prouvençal, a non-profit association founded in 1958 in Sancto Lucio de Coumboscuro, in the municipality of Monterosso Grana, to protect Provençal culture, language and traditions. In the same village the Escolo operates, a multi-grade school that has been experimenting with multilingualism for more than fifty years.
The collection, presented by the Centre as the richest ethnographic collection in the Western Alps, documents mountain life with everyday tools from the mid-19th century until the world wars. The sections cover hemp, wool, milk processing, field-working tools, hay, cereals and bread, domestic crafts, transport, furniture and traditional costumes, and games. A large stone olive press and a rare hemp loom stand out.
The museum occupies a private hall of about 10 by 10 metres; other large objects, such as mills and presses, are kept in private buildings and cannot be visited. Every year a great many people visit it, above all school groups.
