About the museum
The Ecomuseo Val San Martino is a cultural institute run by the Comunità Montana Lario Orientale – Valle San Martino. It covers nine municipalities (Calolziocorte, Caprino Bergamasco, Carenno, Cisano Bergamasco, Erve, Monte Marenzo, Pontida, Torre de' Busi and Vercurago) and is the only ecomuseum in Lombardy that extends across the provinces of Lecco and Bergamo.
The project began between 1997 and 2002 with research by the Politecnico di Milano on the buildings and landscape of the valley. After the survey of the territory, the scientific committee was set up in November 2007 and in 2008 the Regione Lombardia recognised the ecomuseum; accreditation was confirmed after the checks of 2011 and 2017.
The base is Villa De Ponti in Calolziocorte, where the Centro di documentazione e accoglienza visitatori (documentation and visitor reception centre) and the Giardino Botanico are located. The botanical garden occupies the former park of the villa, acquired by the Comunità Montana in the 1990s. The ecomuseum also offers themed itineraries (Via della Fede, castles, nature and biodiversity, traditional agriculture) and educational activities for schools.
