About the museum
The Fondazione Antonio e Carmela Calderara was established on 10 January 1979 in accordance with the wishes of the painter Antonio Calderara, who had personally opened his home, transformed into a museum, to the public to show his collection. Its aim is to preserve the unity and cultural purpose of the works, housed in the 17th-century building in Vacciago, on Lake Orta, which the artist donated to the Foundation.
The collection grew out of Calderara's purchases and exchanges with his contemporary artists, bound to him by esteem, friendship or affinity of research. The painter modestly wanted it to be titled “La storia di Antonio Calderara e una scelta di artisti contemporanei suoi amici” (The Story of Antonio Calderara and a Selection of Contemporary Artist Friends). It comprises 327 paintings and sculptures, of which 56 are by Calderara himself and 271 by European and American artists.
The museum occupies three floors of the house, from the ground floor to the second floor, and is open to the public in the spring, summer and autumn seasons with free admission.
