About the museum
Armeno, on Lake Orta, is known as the village of cooks and waiters: for at least four centuries thousands of its residents have left to work in kitchens, hotels and restaurants around the world. A local tradition links the origin of the trade to Milanese nobles who, to escape the plague, settled between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta and were served by local people; the precise reasons, however, remain surrounded by legend.
The Museo degli Alberghieri, described as a “Luogo della Memoria” (place of memory), collects what cooks, waiters, maîtres, porters and assistants brought back from their travels: work tools, photographs, menus from famous events, rare cookery books and extensive documentation from newspaper articles covering roughly 150 years of history, from powerful figures to ordinary people. The photo galleries also show decorative food sculptures, personalities who were served by the alberghieri (hotel and restaurant workers), and people from Armeno who made careers abroad.
The exhibition is curated by the Associazione Alberghieri Armeno Amicizia, which holds the Festa dei Cuochi (Cooks’ Festival) in the village every year in November.
