About the museum
The Fortezza di Monte Altura is a true fortified citadel built in 1887 to control and defend the north-eastern coast of Sardinia. It was built with local rock, so as to blend into the Gallura landscape, between the Mediterranean scrub and the granite outcrops that show through its walls.
The complex preserves many of its original rooms in good condition: storerooms, ammunition depots, quarters for officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers, dormitories, wash-houses, the powder magazine and the telegraph office. From the site you can see the sea and the mountains of Corsica, about 15 km away from the coast.
The guides accompany visitors along the route, recalling the historical events linked to the territory, from Domenico Millelire to Napoleon Bonaparte, from Admiral Nelson to Garibaldi, and up to the sailors of the cruiser Trieste and the battleship Roma during the Second World War.
