About the museum

The museum's origins date back to 1828, when a physics cabinet for teaching students was set up in the seminary of Chiavari. During the 19th century the collection of instruments expanded with apparatus for experiments in electricity, magnetism and optics.

In 1884 the meteorological tower was built and observations began at the observatory; at the end of the 19th century a seismological cabinet was added. The meteo-seismic observatory was founded on the initiative of a priest from the seminary, with the support of Father Francesco Denza, and the observations were carried out by seminary teachers, to whom the museum is now dedicated.

In 2001 the observatory became a museum, thanks to an agreement between the diocesan seminary and the Comune di Chiavari. The restored instruments are displayed in their original rooms: about three hundred physics instruments, mostly from the first decades of the 19th century and partly from the late 18th century; period seismographs that are still working; and classic meteorological instruments alongside electronic sensors that continue to record observations. The museum offers free visits and free guided tours for schools and groups.
