About the museum
The Quadreria houses the artworks belonging to the Società Economica di Chiavari and to institutions and individuals linked to the city. The idea of a place dedicated to this heritage dates back to 1909, but it was not realised for many decades. In 1986 the Society bought the building in Via Ravaschieri to expand its exhibition spaces and the archives of its library.
The restoration of the 17th-century palace began in 2000 under the direction of the architects Pablo Pagès and Bruno Ronco and took place in three phases: clearing the structures, installing the systems and setting up the museum. The Quadreria was inaugurated on 10 April 2010. The rooms are on the first floor and can also be reached by lift.
The collection includes around two thousand paintings, sculptures and drawings from the 15th to the 20th century. Alongside the Quadreria, the same building houses other collections of the Società Economica, including memorabilia of the Risorgimento (Italian unification), relics of soldiers who fought in the wars and the collection of the sculptor Lorenzo Garaventa.
