About the museum
The collection originated from donations by soldiers who, at the end of the wars, gave their personal belongings to the Associazione Nazionale Combattenti e Reduci (National Association of Combatants and Veterans); the memorabilia were first used to furnish the association’s headquarters. When the association was dissolved, the collection was entrusted to the Società Economica di Chiavari, which has preserved and promoted it ever since. Over the years Lieutenant Colonel Giovanni Marabotti expanded and organised it.
The exhibition includes about 700 pieces from the First and Second World Wars: weapons and ammunition such as sabres, swords, a small cannon, mortars and bombs; personal equipment such as helmets, gas masks, cartridge pouches and wire cutters; and trench objects such as soldiers’ mess tins. The collection also includes a cannon and a mortar, a series of allegorical coats of arms of the Italian armed forces from the 18th century to the present, historical figures and illustrations, and a section on war memorials and Italian war shrines (sacrari), with booklets, drawings and photographs.
