About the museum
The collection began in 1938, during the celebrations of the “Grandi Liguri” (Great Ligurians) organised by the Società Economica together with the municipality: citizens donated or lent documents and memorabilia. In the same year the Società decided to create an exhibition space, curated by the librarian Ugo Oxilia. In 1959 the collection found its permanent home in the Salone Rivarola, on the second floor of the Società Economica building, and continued to grow through donations, purchases, exhibitions and lectures.
Today it comprises about 750 items: weapons, including the sabre of a French senior officer of 1792 and Swiss carbines of the 1851 model; relics such as two Garibaldian red shirts, the medical case of Dr G.B. Prandina and Mazzini’s glass from his exile period in Chiavari; letters from Mazzini, Garibaldi, Cavour, the Bixio brothers and Verdi; telegrams, proclamations, bulletins and newspapers from 1848; portraits, sculptures and lithographs of Risorgimento figures and events.
