About the museum
The Collezione Garaventa grew out of the link between the sculptor Lorenzo Garaventa (Genoa 1913 – 1998) and the Società Economica di Chiavari. From the 1990s the artist gave the society the works that had remained unsold, so that they would be preserved and made accessible to the public. The collection was opened in 1997 in the presence of the sculptor himself.
It is located at Via Ravaschieri 15, in the palazzo that also houses the Quadreria Cassani Copello. It includes 71 sculptures in bronze, marble, wood, plaster and terracotta, and over 2,000 drawings and preparatory studies. An inside room holds plasters and terracottas, while bronzes and marbles are displayed in the terraced garden. The route shows the sculptor’s development from figurative work to abstract research, with works such as the “Grande torso”, the “Metamorfosi” and the “Frammento ritmico”.
