About the museum

The gallery grew out of recent collecting: the first paintings were bought in the late 1950s, but the collection took shape mainly over the last thirty years. The aim is to build a collection of old painting that illustrates the key moments of the artistic tradition of Emilia and Romagna from the 15th to the 18th century, recovering important works that had left their places of origin.

Since 1991 the display has been open to the public on the first floor of the historic building of the former Cassa di Risparmio di Cesena, in Corso Garibaldi. The gallery is now promoted by Crédit Agricole Italia and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Cesena.

The more than seventy works on display range from the Romagnol Renaissance, with the panels of Marco Palmezzano, to the Bolognese barocchetto of Nicola Bertuzzi, through the Raphaelesque period of the Bagnacavallo painters, the Emilian Mannerism of Prospero and Lavinia Fontana and Bastianino, the 17th century of Lionello Spada, Lanfranco, Guercino and Cagnacci, up to the Baroque of Canuti, Viani, Creti and Crespi. Other paintings document the links between Emilian painting and Tuscany and Veneto.
