About the museum
The Pinacoteca Comunale di Cesena is a gallery of ancient, modern and contemporary art displaying panel and canvas paintings and sculptures from the late Middle Ages to today, largely of Emilia-Romagna origin. The civic paintings were acquired after the suppressions under Napoleon and after unification, and were later enriched with works coming mostly from the Congregazione di Carità (Charity Congregation) and from private collections in the city.
The civic collection took shape between the 19th and 20th centuries. The first display, in 1883, occupied some rooms of the Biblioteca Malatestiana; after several temporary arrangements, only in 1984 did the collection find a permanent exhibition home in the former monastery of San Biagio, in Via Aldini.
The works on display cover a period from the 15th century to the present day and offer a panorama of local production, enriched by some works of national importance.
