About the museum

The archaeological museum of Cesena is housed on the ground floor of the building that accommodates the Biblioteca Malatestiana, in the cloister of San Francesco. It holds finds from the Cesena area from prehistory to the Humanist era and is particularly rich in materials from the Roman period.

Among the best-known pieces are fragments of late imperial armour, a relief-decorated bronze plaque, the “Decretum Rubiconis”, a stele commemorating the crossing of the Rubicon, the Case Missiroli hoard, the stelae of the Cesii and of Truppico, and the two famous silver dishes of Missori, from the 4th century, discovered in 1948 on the Colle Garampo. The museum also holds a sarcophagus with its lid from a necropolis, architrave fragments and a brick stamped “Figulus Bonus”.

The museum has been closed to the public for some years. The municipality of Cesena has planned a refurbishment project worth around €2.9 million, with works due to start by September 2026 and reopening in the early months of 2028, in the same rooms as the Malatestiana and with the entrance from Piazza Bufalini.
