About the museum
The Galleria Nazionale di Cosenza is housed in Palazzo Arnone, a large building erected in the 16th century in the historic centre of the city. It is now one of the museums of the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Calabria.
The display presents significant moments of art from the 16th to the 19th century, with works by Calabrian painters such as Pietro Negroni, Marco Cardisco and Francesco Cozza, and by Neapolitan artists who influenced local painting. A particularly interesting group brings together two leading 17th-century figures: the Calabrian Mattia Preti and the Neapolitan Luca Giordano.
The section of graphic works by Umberto Boccioni documents his activity from 1906 to 1915, with studies that reveal the genesis of “La risata”. Thanks to donations and purchases, the collection also includes sculptures by Boccioni, Giorgio de Chirico, Emilio Greco, Antonietta Raphaël, Pietro Consagra, Mimmo Rotella and Bizhan Bassiri. The museum also displays, on loan, the Intesa Sanpaolo collection and documents contemporary art from the area.
